處於躁症或深度憂鬱的人,通常無法創造出任何有意義的作品。處於躁症的人焦慮不安、無法集中精神、意念飛馳,因此無法持續工作;而處於嚴重憂鬱的人則因思考過程太過緩慢,往往覺得絕望而無助,認為沒有值得努力的事,也認為所做的事都毫無價值,因此同樣無法進行創作。

People in mania or deep depression are often unable to produce anything meaningful. People with mania are anxious, unable to concentrate, and have racing thoughts, so they cannot continue working; people with severe depression often feel hopeless and helpless because their thinking process becomes relatively slow, and they think that there is nothing worth working for, everything is worthless, so they can't create anything, either.


然而,罹患這些精神疾病的傾向,在具備創造性的作家之間卻特別普遍。如果要解決這前後矛盾的說法,我們就必須相信這種傾向具有一種激勵的作用,會激勵有創作潛能的人,去從事孤獨、艱難且經常是毫無報償的自我探索,並且記錄自己的發現。


However, the tendency to suffer from these mental illnesses is particularly common among creative writers. If we are to resolve this contradiction, we must believe that this tendency has a motivating effect, motivating those with creative potential to engage in solitary, difficult, and often unrewarded self-exploration and to record their own discovery.

Once he can engage in creative works, he won't crumble. Although the mental state of many creators is “different” than that of ordinary people, they also have greater power to overcome psychological conflicts and distress. Psychiatrists who have treated creatives know that creatives only seek help when they have lost the motivation to create.



不過還是要再一次強調,憂鬱是每個人都會有的體驗,我們面對失落時所感受到的那種憂鬱,以及被稱為精神疾病並需要接受精神科治療的憂鬱症,兩者之間並沒有嚴格的界線,各種憂鬱狀態在深度及嚴重性上雖有極大的差異,但本質上都是相同的。


But again, depression is something that everyone experiences, and there are no rigid boundaries between the kind of depression we feel when faced with loss, and the depression in medical terms and requires psychiatric treatment. Although the depth and severity of various melancholic states vary greatly, they are all essentially the same.



人都擁有某種程度的創作天賦,這些天賦在面臨失落時可能就能產生作用,而且會在永遠覺得有趣的工作中展現出來。音樂、詩文、繪畫或其他被失落所激發的作品,會為其他有同樣苦難的人帶來更多理解與安慰。


Everyone has some level of creative talent that may come into play when they are faced with loss and may manifest themselves in work that they always find interesting. Music, poetry, paintings, or other works inspired by loss can bring greater understanding and comfort to others who are suffering similarly.



這並不是說,不那麼有天賦的人就沒有內在的源泉或想像力,也並不表示只有失落才能激發創作,只是有這樣的可能性而已。詩無法取代人,以創作來回應失落,只是運用想像力的例子罷了。把人與人的關係上綱到人類各種價值中的理想,才會認為創作力是這些關係的替代品。


This does not mean that less talented people do not have inner resources or imagination, nor does it mean that only loss can inspire creation, but it is just a possibility. Poetry cannot replace people, and creating in response to loss is just an example of using imagination. Only those who regard the relationships between people as the ultimate ideal of various human values ​​would consider creativity to be a substitute for these relationships.



藝術家在詩作或其他藝術品中創造了一種和諧,這樣他就能設法恢復內在精神世界中失去的和諧,或找到一種新的和諧,同時創造出實際存在於外在世界的作品。了解自己創作潛能的人,永遠都能跨越外在現實世界與內在精神世界之間的差距。


The artists create harmony in a poem or other form of art so that they can try to restore a lost harmony in the inner spiritual world, or find a new one, while creating a work that actually exists in the outer world. People who understand their own creative potential will always be able to bridge the gap between the outer world of reality and the inner spiritual world.



溫尼考特(Donald Woods Winnicott) 相信「創造性的統覺」會使人覺得生活是值得過下去的東西,而具有創作天賦的人,或許比多數人更能以象徵的方式來彌補生活中的損失。人類心靈似乎把主觀、想像世界所呈現出的新平衡或修復狀態,當作外在世界被改善過的面貌;反之亦然。


Donald Woods Winnicott believed that creative apperception is what makes people feel that life is worth living. And people with creative talents may be better than most people in dealing with losses in life through symbolic means. The human mind seems to regard the new equilibrium or repaired state presented by the subjective and imaginary world as an improved appearance of the external world; and vice versa.



把主觀與客觀做連結時,我們正向人類理解力的極限趨近,而人類創造性適應的秘密,就在這些極限裡。想像力的渴望驅使著人類去尋求新的了解,以及與外在世界連接的新方式,這種渴望同時也是內心對整合與和諧的渴望。


When we connect the subjective and the objective, we are approaching the limits of human understanding, and the secret of human creative adaptation lies within these limits. The desire of imagination drives humans to seek new understandings and new ways of connecting with the outside world. This desire is also the inner desire for integration and harmony.

最近的一些事,讓我重新定義別人說的話對我來說的意義。
不知道是不是經歷過嚴重飲食失調的人才會懂,例如我聽到人家說「噢我吃不太下。」「我從早上忙到現在都沒吃什麼東西。」「人不舒服沒胃口」之類的,我會立刻反射性的冒出「我怎麼會吃這麼多?」「我好貪吃。」「我真不該吃東西。」之類覺得自己很噁心很糟糕的負面心聲。
 Some recent events have redefined how I interpret people's words.
