Belt vessel disorder

The belt vessel is one of the eight extra meridians. It is the only meridian that flows horizontally. The belt vessel originates from the lower part of hypochondrium, near the end of the 11th floating ribs, almost where the LR13 acupoints are, and passes around the waist like a belt. As the belt vessel lies in the pivotal area between the upper and lower body, its essential function is to restrain and connect all the longitudinal meridians.

A male waist circumference of more than 90 cm (about 35 inches; wearing L pants is a bit tight, or must wear XL or above) and a female waist circumference of more than 80 cm (about 31 inches; can not fit into XL pants) is one of the indicators of belt vessel disorder. It may be that the belt vessel disorder causes obesity, or it may be that obesity causes the belt vessel to lose its function. The two can be cause and effect of each other.

Waist circumference is a good indicator (and low-cost, and easily acquired way) for assessing obesity-related health risks, including increased risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Waist circumference specifically reflects abdominal fat, which is linked to these health problems. A large waist circumference can be an early warning sign of these health risks, even if the person has a normal body weight.

The belt vessel is supposed to connect the liver, gallbladder, spleen, stomach, kidney, and bladder meridians and also the governor vessel and conception vessel to ensure normal transportation and utilisation of fluid, humour and nutrients.

When the belt vessel is abnormal or blocked, the transportation of Qi (functions and energy of organ tissues), nutrient and blood, and body fluid will be affected, leading to stagnation of substances such as fat and body fluids, forming a pathology in traditional Chinese medicine called phlegm and water retention, which is related to abnormal metabolic states such as dyslipidemia, a high body fat percentage, and dysglycemia. There might be increased genital discharge, too.

The following are some examples of manifestations of belt vessel disorder:

  • Migraine, tightness and pain in the shoulders and neck, pain in lateral thorax, irritability
  • Dysuria, leucorrhea in women
  • Organ prolapse, hernia, recurrent miscarriage
  • Lower back pain, abdominal muscle weakness, abdominal pain feels like back pain or vice versa
  • Cold feet, lower limb muscle atrophy, lateral thigh tightness, hip pain

Now, what causes belt vessel disorder?

The most common causes are overeating, sexual indulgence, quarrelling, anger, fighting, and excessive physical exertion. In addition, pathological dry heat is also one of the triggering factors, which is common in people who misuse tonic medicine.

In terms of treatment, purgation or vomiting might be used in ancient times. Chinese medicine prescriptions may be a combination of dispersing and tonifying, tonic and purgative, drying dampness and promoting the release of pathogens, moistening and warming and nourishing. Some patients need warming and tonifying, some need astringency. It depends on the patient’s condition, so the therapeutic methods will not be exactly the same.

The diet that addresses the belt vessel disorders may include avoiding foods that are believed to create imbalances, such as heavy, processed foods.

There is another disease related to the belt vessel, called "Kidney fixity", which is characterised by low back pain that feels as cold as ice at the site, and a heaviness in the body as if something heavy is tied around the waist. The patient does not feel thirsty, but keeps urinating. An example is entering a place with ac too cold when you happen to be sweating a lot and tired after running an errand under the scorching sun, which makes you like wrapped in cold and wet clothes. It may lead to “Kidney fixity” over time.

It’s a diseased condition arising when qi and blood of the Kidney meridian become depressed and stagnant, and purging the pathogen into the belt vessel.

There are some overlaps in the function as well as location between the belt vessel and the Solar plexus and the Sacral chakra. Therefore, the healing of the two chakras is also beneficial for the belt vessel. Many yoga poses related to the two chakras involve rotating or twisting the body. You can also wiggle an “8” with your hip like playing a hula hoop.

Caveat emptor

Some recent events have redefined how I interpret people's words. I don’t know if only people who have experienced serious eating disorders would understand, for example, when I hear random person says “Oh, I can’t eat much.” “I haven’t eaten anything since this morning.” “I feel sick and lost appetite” and so on, negative thoughts instantly pop up in my head, such as “Why do I eat so much?” “I’m so greedy.” “I really shouldn’t eat.” and other negative thoughts that make me feel myself disgusting and terrible.
Looking back, I should have noticed earlier that my perception of "normal" might be very different from that of other people. The words others and I use to describe the same thing are often very different. So I think it makes se...

A trial of press tack needle treatment for delirium

At the end of May this year, I received a letter from a journal publisher confirming that the article would be published, even though I had no expectations at all. I immediately shared the good news with a friend outside my professional circle. As he likes to raise questions and start debates, his first reply was: "How were the trial results?" “I think the main result is fewer delirium days in the treatment group. No, I’m not sure, because I should be ‘blinded’, they shouldn’t tell me the results during the study, and by the time he started writing the paper, I left the hospital.” “I see. Seems like how a lot of China does their TCM research…questionably. But faster healing…if true, is good.” He tried to save it.
