To Align or to Rebel? An Anthroposophical and Eastern Discourse on the Nocturnal Soul
“The operational nature of Po (the Corporeal Soul) manifests in our capacity for movement and action; through it, all sensations of pain and itch arise.” In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Po, housed within the Lungs, governs bodily instincts, reflexes, and foundational sensory perceptions—such as the registry of pain, touch, and the primal suckling reflex of a newborn. It can therefore be understood as the primordial Astral body, residing in closest proximity to the Physical and Etheric bodies.
The Hun (the Spiritual Soul) housed within the Liver is entwined with spiritual quests, dreams, the subconscious, foresight, and creative inspiration; thus, the Hun represents the Astral body awaiting transformation by the Ego.
Yet, as the classic maxim dictates, “the Hun follows the movements of Shen (the Spirit).” All consciousness and emotion must ultimately be perceived and expressed through the Heart. The Shen of TCM corresponds closely to the Anthroposophical “Ego” or “I”, an entity that must rely upon the Heart-Blood and Heart-Yin as its material vessels, ensuring the Spirit remains securely anchored within its proper domain.
"In the light of Anthroposophy, the nocturnal soul is understood as one whose Astral body possesses an exceptional sensitivity or a heightened, vibrant hyperactivity." Throughout the daytime, the sheer inundation of sensory stimuli, worldly clamour, and societal demands imposes an overwhelming burden upon them, compelling the Ego to expend immense reservoirs of spiritual energy simply to erect its defenses. Consequently, during the hours of daylight, they are left feeling depleted, tightly strung, or utterly estranged from their authentic creativity—the very creative impulse that serves as the hallmark of a healthy, harmonious Ego-organisation.
Yet, as the clock chimes past eleven in the evening, the collective consciousness grows still. The distractions of the external world—the noise and the relentless societal expectations—dissolve into the shadows. Within this quiet sanctuary of time and space, their Ego and Astral body reclaim a profound sense of sovereignty and autonomous control. Here, at last, they find safety and freedom; they are no longer required to do battle with the outer world. In this serene retreat, their thoughts awaken, becoming boundlessly vibrant and radiously alive.
Should sleep be delayed until 2-3 in the morning, it signifies that only then does the Astral body finally surrender its grip, permitting the Etheric body to commence its nocturnal labours of restoration. This vital process of structural renewal and energetic recharging demands its full, uninterrupted cycle. Consequently, the night owl must remain in slumber until noon, or even two in the afternoon, to complete the profound somatic healing that should rightfully have taken place in the dead of night. To forcefully rouse them early would inflicting enduring harm upon the physical form itself.
Furthermore, those who habitually succumb to the late hours generally belong to a constitutional type dominated by an extreme supremacy of the neuro-sensory system centered in the head. Throughout the day, they expend a vast surplus of mental fortitude and intellectual force. By nightfall, their nervous system resembles a taut, over-heated rubber band—stretched to its absolute limit and incapable of immediate cooling. It is only after the threshold of two in the morning, when the nervous system finally succumbs to exhaustion and begins to cool, that a profound wave of genuine relaxation and comfort washes over them, allowing them to drift into sleep.
Through the lens of TCM, this nocturnal phenomenon can be deconstructed into three distinct dimensions. The first of which is a “deficiency in Heart-Yin or Heart-Blood.” Under this condition, the organisational power of the Ego becomes enfeebled, rendering it incapable of smoothly guiding the four bodies into their respective domains for sleep. The material substrates for the Ego are Blood and Warmth. It is through the heart and the rhythmic dance of blood circulation that the Ego proclaims its sovereign presence—the “I Am”—thereby orchestrating and integrating the three lower bodies. As the ancient Chinese medical canons declare, “the Heart governs the blood vessels,” and “the Spirit (Shen) relies upon the blood as its anchor.” Thus, when Heart-Yin or Heart-Blood is depleted, the Ego effectively forfeits its earthly sanctuary and its vital warmth within the physical realm. Clinically, this manifests as a frail, ungrounded Ego-organisation. As the night deepens, the Ego resembles an exhausted parent who has lost all authority over unruly children; it enters a state of deficient hyperactivity. Though the individual longs for rest, the Spirit floats adrift, thoughts scatter into restless fragments, and the more fatigued they become, the more elusive sleep remains—a classic presentation of “an unquiet Spirit born of deficient Yin and rising fire.”
The second dimension manifests as a deficiency in Liver-Blood or Liver-Yin, or alternatively, a stagnation of Liver-Qi. This may manifest either as a deficiency of Yin-Blood inducing Qi stagnation, or as prolonged stagnation generating internal heat that subsequently consumes the Liver's Yin-Blood. This pathological state leaves the emotions (Astral body) exceedingly vulnerable to irritation, rendering the psyche incapable of drawing back from a state of hyper-arousal. In TCM, the Liver governs the smooth flow of Qi and serves as the storehouse of Blood; furthermore, “the Liver houses the Hun (the Spiritual Soul).” Chronic sleep deprivation or unrelenting emotional pressure eventually transmutes into a pathological fire, a stagnant heat that directly scorches the Liver-Yin and Liver-Blood. During the hours of 11 pm to 1 am and 1 am to 3 am, the body’s Qi and Blood are naturally ordained to flow into the Gallbladder and Liver meridians. At this precise juncture, those burdened by stagnant Liver-Qi and rampant Liver-fire will find their Hun tormented by this internal heat, stubbornly refusing to yield to slumber. Instead, in the dead of night, they experience a morbidly heightened clarity and a compulsive creativity—even a fierce, obsessive desire for control, driven by an unyielding urge to bring a task to absolute completion. This is the very essence of the heat pathogen within the Liver perturbing the Hun, preventing the Spiritual Soul from its rightful, peaceful retraction.
The third dimension involves a deficiency in Lung-Qi or Lung-Yin, which renders the physical form highly susceptible to disruption on a purely somatic level, making it exceedingly difficult to recover its natural rhythm once startled. In TCM, the Po (the Corporeal Soul) relies entirely upon the Lung-Qi’s dual functions of diffusing and descending to maintain the body’s defensive armor—known as “Wei-Qi”—as well as its spatial boundaries via the skin, and its inherent physiological rhythms. When Lung-Qi or Lung-Yin is depleted, the Po is stripped of its protective shield, leaving it intensely vulnerable to external alarms. However, this pathology rarely manifests as a subjective preference for late hours or a feeling of comfort in night owl tendencies. Instead, it reveals itself as an inability to maintain deep slumber: the individual becomes “easily startled awake” or remains a chronically light sleeper, roused by the slightest rustle or shift in the environment. Alternatively, they may find themselves invariably waking in the dead of night between the hours of three and five in the morning—the precise period when the Lung meridian is dominant—often accompanied by the distressing onset of night sweats or shallow, obstructed breathing.
For those who habitually find solace only in sleeping late and waking late, their Po is not typically startled due to its own inherent deficiency; rather, it is bullied and suppressed by an over-activated Hun (the Liver) and Shen (the Heart). When fire rages within the Heart and Liver, causing the Spirit and Spiritual Soul to burn with excessive fervour in the deep hours of the night, the Po—which governs the instinctive restoration of the physical form—is forced into a state of numbness or profound imbalance. Consequently, though the physical body is utterly exhausted, the intellect and higher consciousness (Shen-Hun) refuse to grant permission for release. It is only around two or three in the morning, when the fire of the Shen-Hun finally burns itself out and its energy is utterly spent, that the Po is at last permitted to reclaim dominion over the physical form. Only then is that deep, restorative, and compensatory slumber induced, allowing the individual to remain asleep until the afternoon to salvage the body's depleted vitality.
Must we, then, forcibly alter this 'night owl' condition?
Viewed objectively, those who habitually sleep and wake late exist in a state of disharmony with the respiratory rhythms of the Earth itself. They surrender to slumber precisely as the planet prepares to awaken at dawn, remaining wrapped in a blanket of unconsciousness throughout the morning hours—between nine and midday—when the Earth's vitality is at its zenith. This dislocation inevitably weakens the Ego’s communion with the natural world. Although they may subjectively find this nocturnal cycle to be their most comfortable state of being—as it offers a sanctuary from pressure and sensory overload—such prolonged alienation from cosmic rhythms carries a hidden cost. Over time, this severance causes their physical form to gradually grow desiccated and dry, leaving their vital forces vulnerable to the risk of premature depletion.
However, if we adopt a more humane and individualised perspective, we may discern two entirely distinct archetypes among these nocturnal souls:
The first belongs to the congenital night owl whose life exists in perfect harmony. Should your profession and lifestyle accommodate this rhythm—as is often the case for independent artists or midnight creators—and you wake feeling infused with vitality, emotionally anchored, and blessed with robust immunity, it signifies that your physical form has discovered a unique equilibrium within its own microcosm. Provided you maintain an unwavering regularity in this late cycle, your being will continue to receive a deeply rhythmic nourishment.
The second archetype is one driven by an evasion of reality or accompanied by psychosomatic distress. If, despite finding subjective comfort in these late hours, you awaken to a profound sense of emptiness, succumb easily to daytime melancholy, or suffer from a fragile immune system, it reveals a far more troubling truth: your Ego has forfeited its capacity to govern the somatic vessel. In such an instance, a conscious and necessary transformation must be sought.
