How these teas (and that logo) actually came to be.

Luna’s Rest

It happened during a rather chaotic eighteen-month stretch where my life was thoroughly upended. I was simultaneously resigning from my job, selling my house, buying another property to set up my practice, and moving. Amidst this domestic hurricane, my mother’s eyesight began to fail. I duly escorted her to the grand medical centre in the neighboring county, only to be told that both of her eyes required surgery.

Four months later, the operations proved to be a roaring success. Her vision was fully restored, and she could finally bin her spectacles. The catch? Her eyes wouldn’t stop watering. Every single day. I grew utterly weary of seeing her spend every waking hour dabbing at her face with a never-ending stream of tissues. I thought to myself: “You call yourself a Chinese medicine practitioner, yet you can’t even brew a proper cup of medicinal tea to soothe your own mother’s eyes?”

Around the same time, a steady parade of patients (of a certain vintage, ranging from the middle-aged to the silver-haired) began arriving at my clinic, grumbling about dry eyes, general discomfort, and phantom floaters drifting across their vision. It occurred to me then that a dedicated herbal tea was precisely what the doctor ordered—something comforting they could sip daily. After all, a pleasant daily brew is arguably much better for the soul than trekking to my clinic once a week just to choke down a prescription of bitter herbal powders.

The Polite Shield

It was just before the Mid-Autumn Festival, that awkward seasonal limbo where summer grudgingly gives way to autumn, when a sudden wave of sniffly, coughing patients besieged my clinic. One of them rather hopefully inquired if I possessed some sort of magical potion—akin to the famous "NRICM101" (清冠一號)—that one could simply chug down to ward off a cold. Upon reflection, I conceded they had a point.

And so, I set to work formulating a medicinal tea designed primarily to give the body's immune system a polite but firm nudge. The idea was to throw a protective cloak over those poor souls who, by choice or cruel circumstance, find themselves trapped in stuffy, enclosed spaces, forced to mingle with the germ-ridden public.

The subsequent feedback from my regulars, however, has been a rather delightful bonus: apart from keeping the seasonal bugs at bay, they report an unexpected spring in their step and a welcome relief from those nagging joint aches.

The splash of blue you see on our logo is none other than the “Blue Bougainvillea.” As for why it’s blue, and why a bougainvillea of all things—well, the image simply manifested in my mind one morning during my commute to work. I merely did my best to faithfully recreate it. The very moment it popped into my head, my intuition flatly informed me: “This is a Blue Bougainvillea.” And so, it was. No further questions asked.

P.S. It can also morph into other colours, just so you know.

Grotesquephilia

I just finished watching Made in Abyss recently. Because there are still some parts in the plot that are not explained clearly, I went to the forum to find discussions about character settings and metaphors, and then I saw the interview records of the author that someone had compiled. (It’s an anime series adapted from a manga that released almost a decade ago, so you can find a lot of information.) In one paragraph, the author mentioned that when he was in high school, he focused on drawing creatures with many warts and the technique of drawing cross-section of warts realistically. This reminded me of a classmate in junior high school who liked to draw ugly things. The more disgusting and uglier, the funnier she thought it was.

Sleep inertia

Sleep inertia refers to the groggy, disoriented feeling experienced after waking up. It's a transitional state between sleep and wakefulness characterized by impaired cognitive and physical performance. Sleep inertia typically lasts around 30 minutes, but it's normal within an hour. People who are night person (owl), people with high social jet lag (more than two hours of difference between midpoint of sleep on workdays and midpoint of sleep on free days [shifts forward or backwards]), and people who wake up from deep sleep or during a REM sleep cycle can increase the likelihood of experiencing sleep inertia. These people also have a higher reliance on external stimuli (such as alarm clocks) to wake them up.
