Of Meat-Monsters and Matrices

The howling sky.

There I was, standing in my childhood bedroom. Mind you, this house was sold ages ago, and I’ve long since moved on, but dreams do love a bit of nostalgic real estate. The place looked as though a localised earthquake had thrown an absolute tantrum. Everything I ever owned was strewn across the floor and piled chaotically onto the desk. Overhead, those floor-to-ceiling bookshelves from my youth loomed like precarious skyscrapers of dust and old paper. It was a proper shambles. My plan was simple, if cowardly: grab a few essentials and make a remarkably swift exit, because frankly, I was terrified out of my wits.

The real snag, however, lay just across the hall.

Directly opposite my door was the master bedroom—the very room where my late father spent his final ten years, and a place I wouldn't dare step foot into in waking life. Right then, it was emitting a series of monstrous, deeply unsettling groans. Emerging from the gloom was a towering, humanoid abomination—a grotesque patchwork of bruised blues, deep purples, and liver-colored flesh all fused together. It was utterly intent on murder. For legs, it sported a pair of rather avant-garde human long bones, and trailing behind was a tail made of charred, black bone fragments, looking precisely like a Stegosaurus that had survived a house fire but lost the skin-and-meat department.

The chap seemed blind as a bat. But its hearing was impeccable. The slightest peep, and this muscular mountain of meat would charge blindly at full throttle. It was already smashing into everything like an oversized, fleshy bowling ball, cracking the walls and leaving the entire building structurally compromised. As plaster and debris began raining down around me, I realised I had to be very, very quiet. Or very, very fast.

So, there I was, entirely frozen in my tracks like a startled rabbit, looking at the very items I desperately needed to salvage but now couldn't possibly carry. An intrusive middle-aged auntie who completely misread the room. Ignoring my glaring, sweaty aura of sheer panic, she grabbed me by the arm and marched me upstairs. Her logic? The building was suspiciously empty, which obviously meant whatever was going wrong was entirely my responsibility.

We dragged ourselves up to the third floor. It was dead of night, pitch black, and utterly devoid of working light bulbs. Through the gloom came a rhythmic, metallic clanking. Clang, clang... pause... clang, clang. Auntie informed me, with tremendous indignation, that the neighbour opposite was a certified lunatic who had been making this racket for ages, and tonight, she was going to "teach him a bloody lesson." I couldn't help but wonder why on earth my evening now involved deliberately provoking a madman, or why she hadn't considered a more subtle approach. Meanwhile, my mental clock was ticking. The blind, liver-colored meat-mountain downstairs was still on the loose, and I was running out of time.

Before I could politely decline, Auntie shoved a mirror into my left hand and instructed me to twist it with "clever, surgical precision" to catch the beam of her flashlight and reflect it directly into the lunatic's eyes over on the opposite roof. Excellent. Using a low brick wall for cover—because I had a sneaky, distinct suspicion we were in sniper territory—I held the mirror up blindly, guessing the angles. Naturally, it wasn't good enough for her. Losing her patience, she shoved the flashlight into my other hand, demanding I dual-wield her makeshift lighthouse apparatus, her voice escalating into a hysterical screech.

That was my cue to leave. Abandoning the screaming Auntie to her rooftop feud, I bolted back down to my room. I had a mission to complete elsewhere, but my hands were empty. The cruel math of the situation quickly set in: I had roughly three seconds before the monster blocked my only exit route entirely, and it was physically impossible to sort through a lifetime of debris in that window. Paralysed by the sheer terror of it all, I realised my time to forage had expired; it was now strictly time to run. Yet, as I prepared to flee empty-handed, a bleak thought struck me—if I left without a single keepsake, this entire, horrifying trip down memory lane was completely pointless.

Right on cue, the monster burst out, and I nearly became a human pancake. I sprinted for my life and took a desperate, flying leap forward, narrowly dodging a heavy, walloping swing that pulverised the stairs entirely behind me. I tumbled out into the open air just as a girl came rushing toward me. "Hurry up and go back for your things!" she yelled. I panted, "But I haven't got a single thing!" To which she replied, "Then get bloody well back in there and grab them! I'll hold off the beast, just move!"

The only snag in her heroic plan was that after the monster’s apocalyptic smash-up, it had plunged headfirst into a massive chasm that had conveniently opened up in the ground, dragging what was left of the house down with it. As I stood outside watching the building collapse into a pile of rubble, I froze. In my mind, there was no longer a "room" to return to. My keepsakes were now buried under tons of structural debris, and there was absolutely no getting them back.

Which brought me to a rather massive existential crisis regarding my mission. In my mind's eye, I could vaguely picture the destination: a triangular portal framed by overlapping, geometric crystalline pillars. The whole scene was a dizzying kaleidoscope of stark whites and teal-blues, with a yellowish-brown opening right in the centre leading to a much vaster space—not unlike looking into a bird's-eye theatre at a science museum.

Except, looking at it from the outside now, the portal was completely malfunctioning. The geometric perfection had devolved into a blurry mess of hollow, disconnected rings. All around my peripheral vision, shadowy figures were sprinting across the fractured, overlapping crystals, only to vanish into thin air. It was a properly broken, multi-dimensional jigsaw puzzle.

The mysterious objects I had failed to rescue from my bedroom were the exact tools required to reach inside that central hole and operate the mechanism. Only then would I receive instructions for what to do next. Safe to say, without my cosmic keys, the universe was thoroughly stuck on pause.

Dissection of the Dream𓍼𓈒𓂂 𓈒

A childhood bedroom is the ultimate bastion of internal security and the private self. Now, my waking self has long since handed over the keys and moved on, yet the brain stubbornly chooses this specific real estate for its horror show. This suggests that certain psychological shadows or unresolved issues from the past are still loitering in the corridors of my mind, refusing to vacate the premises. My frantic urge to grab a few essentials and bolt represents a very conscious, very desperate desire to cut ties with the past. The tragic comedy of it all is that, to move forward, there are still vital bits of myself that require travelling back in time to retrieve.

The earthquake is the classic symbol of a foundation thoroughly rocked. It seems the seemingly stable worldview of my youth didn't just crack; it suffered a catastrophic structural failure. This hints at a massive upheaval (or perhaps a series of them) during my formative years that utterly shattered the status quo. In the ensuing chaotic debris, those "important things" I wanted to salvage became hopelessly tangled with old memories and survivalist clutter. Trying to sort the treasure from the trash in a panic was a completely impossible mission.

Here, the star of our nightmare is the blind, meat-and-bone monstrosity. The master bedroom, where my late father spent a decade, was already a forbidden zone shrouded in heavy repression. The colour palette of the beast—bruised blue-purple and liver-flesh—is the very hue of suffocation, pathology, and decay. The skeletal accessories, featuring human long bones and a charred, Stegosaurus-style tail of bone fragments, heavily imply the gruelling reality of my father’s prolonged illness, suffering, or the suffocating shadow of mortality itself. The monster, therefore, is a grotesque, shapeshifted avatar of that very trauma.

The creature is blind, utterly unreasonable, and completely destructive, launching its entire bulk into a full-throttle sprint at the slightest peep, cracking the very walls of my reality. This points to a devastating, inescapable pressure in my waking life. It suggests that I might currently find myself in a modern-day minefield—an environment where I am constantly walking on eggshells. The moment I dare to make a tiny bit of noise, or try to take a step forward to leave the past behind, it will trigger a furious, catastrophic backlash that threatens to collapse the whole house around my ears.

About that utterly insufferable auntie who dragged me up to the third floor. She is the perfect, glittering avatar of external tyranny—the embodiment of unreasonable expectations, emotional blackmail, and the suffocating pressure of moral obligations forced upon me by the outside world. Alternatively, she represents my own internal "people-pleasing" protocol, a deeply ingrained mechanism that practically forces me to collect responsibilities that don't belong to me in the slightest.

The task she set me was beautifully absurd, wasn't it? Blindly twisting a mirror in the dead of night, desperately hoping to reflect a stray beam of light onto a maniac's face. It is the textbook definition of ineffective, exhausting busywork. While a literal flesh-beast was sniffing around downstairs, she demanded that I micromanage a completely irrelevant, hostile neighbour. It mirrors those thankless, agonising tasks in waking life where I exhaust my vital energies for someone who is perpetually unsatisfied. I’m sweating bullets, utterly terrified of being sniped from the shadows, and yet the only reward for my compliance is being handed a heavier flashlight and being screamed at to work faster.

By abandoning the hysterical auntie on her rooftop, my subconscious demonstrated that I’ve finally recognised the need to refuse this sort of toxic, unreasonable emotional drain.

In the dialect of dreams, a shattered staircase means the bridge has been burned, and the old paths are entirely gone.

And those precious belongings I couldn't carry out initially, but felt an overwhelming, desperate urge to salvage from the ruins, aren't mere trinkets. They represent the heavy artillery of my identity—my authentic self, my personal dignity, and my core values, all of which were carelessly misplaced or buried during the chaotic upheavals of my upbringing.

The grand finale introduces the girl who stepped in. She is a creation of my own psyche. She is proof that I have quietly grown a spine of absolute steel. At my absolute lowest ebb—when I felt utterly empty-handed, stripped of everything, and pursued by a literal trauma-monster—she stepped up to take the wallop for me. And her command wasn't just a suggestion; it was an order. By fiercely telling me to "go back and get it," she is my inner courage, demanding that I reclaim the vital pieces of myself that I left behind in the rubble.

That dazzling arena of geometric crystal pillars isn't just a place; it is the ultimate, high-definition matrix of my deeper psyche—my internal spiritual laboratory. This crystalline sanctuary injects a massive dose of purpose and structural rebooting into what was previously just a frantic, terrifying escape. In the grand dictionary of psychological symbols, stark, highly ordered geometric patterns—like crystals—represent structure, pure reason, and cosmic order. That central triangular portal? A classic geometric shout-out to stability, transformation, and the ultimate trinity of selfhood—be it Past, Present, and Future, or Mind, Body, and Spirit. My subconscious essentially looked at the fleshy, oozing chaos of the trauma-monster downstairs and said, "Right, enough of that rubbish. Let's bring in some bloody order." Beneath all the panic, there exists a beautifully clean, immaculate space inside me dedicated entirely to profound psychological repair.

The blurry, disconnected hollow rings floating about are the ultimate metaphorical puzzle. They behave like an unresolved cypher, a misaligned set of gears, or a combination lock waiting for the right code. That central tunnel represents the next grand chapter of my life—or perhaps a long-buried, dusty reserve of raw personal potential. It is blurry and disjointed right now simply because I haven’t officially unlocked it yet. The fractured, overlapping sense of space, with shadowy figures sprinting across the crystals only to vanish into thin air, is pure quantum mechanics. It’s a matrix of infinite possibilities. Those vanishing sprinters are likely fragments of my former selves, discarded ideas, or the fleeting passengers of my life journey. My entire worldview and old cognitive programming are currently being smashed to pieces and rearranged into something different.

Those elusive "important things" I was so desperately trying to rescue from my old bedroom despite the monsters and the screaming aunties. They weren’t dusty old trinkets or sentimental keepsakes at all. They were the highly specialised tools and essential components required to jump-start my future.

My dream-self noting that "only by doing this will I know the next step" means I don't need to have the grand, ultimate answers to my entire life figured out right this second. I don't need to see the whole map. I simply need to navigate this current, bumpy transition, find my cosmic keys in the rubble, and slot them into the machine. The rest of the instructions will follow in due course.

Let us talk about that elusive "tool"—the thing I was supposed to thrust into the yellowish-brown portal to make the universe work again. If you want me to translate that mystical object into a real-world capability or mindset, I'll say it is nothing less than the guts to speak my absolute truth, completely disregarding the fact that it might invite a barrage of attacks, misunderstandings, fury, or outright humiliation. Ironically, when I was a child, doing this was as natural as breathing. I did it constantly. But as the years rolled on, I packed that raw honesty into a box and hid it away in the deepest recesses of my mental closet. I actually patted myself on the back for this, genuinely believing it was a sign of mature adulthood. After all, by keeping my head down, blending perfectly into the crowd, and nodding along to everyone else’s whims, I became more welcomed and liked. The rather tragic thing is that I ended up thoroughly disliking myself. I began to view the authentic self as a shameful, unsightly secret that needed to be locked away from polite society, while the person everyone else adored was nothing more than a highly manufactured hollow shell.

And why on earth was this authentic self buried in the very house guarded by that bone-and-flesh monstrosity? Because back in the day, whenever I dared to speak my mind, the immediate reward was a monstrous groan and a full-throttle, catastrophic charge. It was the crushing, unreasonable wrath of an environment where speaking up meant shattering the very foundations of my home, or being buried under an avalanche of toxic humiliation.

For a long time, I believed that if I was just a good, compliant little soul—helping out, playing along, and blindly adjusting my mirror to reflect light exactly how I was told—I would finally buy myself safety and affection. But as the hysterical auntie so beautifully demonstrated, pandering to the unreasonable only invites them to be even more aggressively unhinged. When I exhaust all my vital life force playing the role of a flawless, people-pleasing mannequin, that toxic sense of shame—the nagging feeling that the real me is something to be hidden away—doesn't actually come from the monsters outside. It comes from the quiet, heartbreaking realisation that I have betrayed myself.

It turns out that yellowish-brown tunnel isn’t just a random hole in space-time; it is the ultimate gateway to absolute, unvarnished self-honesty. True, the very moment I dare to speak my mind, the psychological landscape goes completely haywire—fracturing, overlapping, and filling up with shadowy, judgmental figures. That is simply the raw terror of peer pressure, the crushing fear of retaliation, and the distinct possibility that my entire social circle is about to be reshuffled. But remember the text of the dream: “Only by doing this will I know the next step.” I don’t need to be a fortune-teller. I don’t need to predict how the world will react. The mere act of opening my mouth and uttering my truth is, in itself, the giant red button that jumpstarts my internal cosmic order.

That agonising moment when I fled the house empty-handed and felt like an absolute failure. When I took that desperate, flying leap into the open air and met that fierce girl, the real victory was achieved. The entire meaning of this dream lay in one profound achievement: recognising the sheer, unadulterated scale of the chaos.

In the past, I merely carried the quiet shame of thinking I was a coward who couldn't speak up. But this little trip down memory lane forced me to look at the architectural reality of my trauma. It wasn't a neat, empty room I walked away from; it was an active disaster zone. I was standing in the ruins of a massive emotional earthquake, given a ridiculous three-second deadline to sort through a lifetime of debris, all while a blind flesh-beast was preparing to turn me into a puddle. With only two hands, surviving that scenario was an entirely impossible mission.

But in the second act of the dream, the cosmic game rules completely changed. The clock was beautifully reset.

With the arrival of that brave girl holding the line, I was no longer trapped in that suffocating, three-second death trap. She bought me time. She carved out space. She used her own formidable strength to wrestle the very monster that used to block my escape routes and leave me paralysed.

It means I do not have to force myself to become a fearless, truth-telling superhero overnight while my nervous system is still shrieking with the fear of being attacked. I don't have to fix everything this second. The grand triumph of this entire nightmare is that I have finally, officially acknowledged my desperate, burning desire to reclaim my authentic self. More importantly, I have constructed a magnificent internal defence system. I have a guardian now. And the next time I have to venture back into the haunted ruins of my past to dig out my core values, I will no longer be a terrified, helpless child shivering in the dark. I’ll have backup.

If I want to summon this fierce girl’s strength into my daily, waking life, I must ask myself what sort of spiritual fuel she runs on. The answer, it turns out, is the absolute, burning refusal to let all this suffering be entirely meaningless.

It’s the grand, spiteful realisation that if the universe is ultimately going to collapse into ruin anyway, letting it happen without extracting a single ounce of purpose is just, well... incredibly stupid. And I simply refuse to go out looking foolish.

In the high-brow corridors of existential psychology, this exact mindset—this fierce, stubborn declaration of "I don't care if the ship is sinking, I am going to find meaning in the wreckage"—is known as Rebellion. When a human being looks back at a lifetime of prolonged suffering, quiet repression, and exhausting people-pleasing, only to realise it bought them absolutely nothing but a hollow shell, something magnificent happens. The inner dignity, long asleep, suddenly wakes up with a massive hangover and a tremendous amount of spite. Once that pilot light of righteous indignation is ignited, it doesn't just sit there; it provides a spectacular, high-octane drive to actually do something.

This explains why the girl in the dream didn't behave like a gentle, weeping saint offering a warm blanket and a cup of tea. She didn't come to coddle me. She is the sheer defiance reincarnated as a warrior. By hurling her entire being into the path of that unreasonable, blind flesh-beast, she was effectively screaming at destiny itself: “I don't care how chaotic the past was, or how ridiculously short the three-second deadline is—I am not letting this entire tragedy be pointless! You! Yes, you! Get back in that room right now and claw back what belongs to you!”

As I stand there amid the splintered remains of my childhood desk and shattered floor, I no longer have to guess what I’m looking for. I know exactly what that elusive tool looks like. It is the brilliant, vibrant fragment of my original soul—the little kid who spoke with absolute, unvarnished honesty and dared to show their true, loud colours before the world told them to hush.

I can reach down into the dust, pick that shiny little fragment up, wipe off the decades of debris, and grip it tightly in my fist. And then, walk with absolute purpose toward that magnificent, shimmering matrix of white and teal crystal pillars, slide my hand into that yellowish-brown portal, and finally start the machine. The old script is officially being torn up, the ending is being rewritten, and not a single bit of this horror show will have been in vain.

Grotesquephilia

I just finished watching Made in Abyss recently. Because there are still some parts in the plot that are not explained clearly, I went to the forum to find discussions about character settings and metaphors, and then I saw the interview records of the author that someone had compiled. (It’s an anime series adapted from a manga that released almost a decade ago, so you can find a lot of information.) In one paragraph, the author mentioned that when he was in high school, he focused on drawing creatures with many warts and the technique of drawing cross-section of warts realistically. This reminded me of a classmate in junior high school who liked to draw ugly things. The more disgusting and uglier, the funnier she thought it was.

Sleep inertia

Sleep inertia refers to the groggy, disoriented feeling experienced after waking up. It's a transitional state between sleep and wakefulness characterized by impaired cognitive and physical performance. Sleep inertia typically lasts around 30 minutes, but it's normal within an hour. People who are night person (owl), people with high social jet lag (more than two hours of difference between midpoint of sleep on workdays and midpoint of sleep on free days [shifts forward or backwards]), and people who wake up from deep sleep or during a REM sleep cycle can increase the likelihood of experiencing sleep inertia. These people also have a higher reliance on external stimuli (such as alarm clocks) to wake them up.
